FPAN: Sidewalk Archaelogy in Pensacola

Downtown areas are full of archaeological sites!  Case in point: Pensacola Florida.

What is now downtown Pensacola has been settled by Native people, Europeans, and Africans for hundreds of years. While the Spanish first came to Pensacola in 1559, they didn't permanently settle the location of downtown Pensacola until the 1750s. And just beneath the ground we walk on today are the physical remains of their past activities! In this video FPAN's Mike points out some artifacts he observes on the surface while walking along a sidewalk.

A local construction project unearthed the materials, and unfortunately it appears some archaeology with it. Remember, take only photos and leave only footprints. Never collect artifacts or disturb archaeological sites on state or federal lands. If you do see an artifact, take a picture of it and contact your local FPAN office.
